Broken Hill: Bogged on the Way

May 20th, 2008

Alvin at the Sand DunesWe were woken early when workers came at about 8am to the nearby irrigation pumping station, so we were soon on our way.

On our way to Broken Hill, just outside Wentworth up the Silver City Highway, we detoured to have a look at the Perry red sand dunes. While stopping to read a sign on the roadside, we became bogged and panic set in. We were not ready for this. Now this was going to test our skills in survival!

Fortunately for us not long later a tractor driver on his way to work stopped to help push us out of the mud. Not sure how mud covered we would have become if he hadn’t come to the rescue.

The road to Broken Hill was classic Australia desert. We really enjoyed some classic Aussie outback landscape views. Once we were settled in Broken Hill, we took the afternoon to visit a sculpture park about 10km out of town. The best thing about it was the view of the surrounding nothingness - spectacular.
