Alice Springs: Sonny and Cher - woops I mean Jen!

Standley Chasm

We arrived at the popular spot of Standley Chasm at about 10.30am, too early for the ideal time of midday when the sunlight sneaks through to light the walls and floor of the narrow chasm. We took our time and saw a little of this.

When we were walking through the chasm Rob dropped his sunnies, but did not realise until later. After half an hour of looking for them amongst the rocks, he gave up - only to find out that fortunately someone had found them and handed them in at the kiosk!

Back near Alice Springs was the Memorial to John Flynn, the founder of the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

At Alice Springs we checked into Sonny and Jen's place, and were offered a spacious bed inside for the night - a luxury for us. First, we had a tour of their amazing backyard, which looks like piles of rocks, but to the trained fossicker such as Sonny, it was a treasure trove of gems. He has the making of a museum with his collection of shells, fossils and gemstones.

The evening we spent with Rob's cousin Jimmy at the local club, having a cheap roast meal with what seemed like most of the rest of Alice Springs. On the drive home, we had an incident with some of the local indigenous population. We stopped to assist someone who was lying on the road in front of us, but were soon joined by other people from the shadows and once we realised we were not welcome we had to reverse out to safety in a hurry.
