Hahndorf, Adelaide Hills: Oktoberfest in February

February 6th, 2009

Dancing in the BarnIt is only February, but this day we spent in Hahndorf could have been during the Oktoberfest in October, or even in Munich itself, considering how much beer we drank.

We enjoyed a big sleep in, after the hard walk yesterday and late night chatting with Sharon. Another over 40 degree day today with gale force winds as well! So we decided to do some more walking (of course) … and headed into Hahndorf and made our way slowly along the main street.

In Hahndorf there are lots of galleries, craft shops, lolly shops and cafes, as expected in any tourist town, though today many of them were closed due to the heat. The main gallery was very interesting … again as we’ve been here before. We stopped for some German fare of sausages and sauerkraut at a café, before reaching our main destination, the pub with air-conditioning to help us deal with the afternoon heat.

There are three pubs on the main street, but we chose the one with a kiddies room, to give us some extra time. As Olive slept, we got stuck into the German beers. A few hours later we walked back to camp for a swim. Today was the black day for Victoria, with the start of the bushfire destruction. We are glad we have moved on from that part of Australia.
