Stringybark Campground, Deep Creek Conservation Reserve: Coastal Beauty

February 15th, 2009 : stringybark-campground-deep-creek-conservation-reserve-coastal-beauty

Coastal ViewAfter packing up the van, we stumbled across a beautiful rocky cliff top walk along the end of the point. Then we ventured into Port Elliot, to sample some of their food from the famous bakery that everyone had told us about. From here we drove back through Victor Harbor for supplies then continued across the peninsula. We had a short stop at the quite uninteresting Glacier Rock, before reaching the more interesting Yankalilla, home of a shrine to Mary. The image of Mary has miraculously appeared on the back wall of the church. To us it just looked like a dodgy plastering job, we are obviously not enlightened. Outside the church, it was not a surprise to meet a religious zealot. A couple of kms away on the coast was pretty Normanville, with a lovely beach and coastline, where we stopped for coffee. Further south along the coast road we stopped at Rapid Bay. After a fantastic drive down the valley into the town, it was a disappointment to find nothing of interest. There was also no sign of the leafy sea dragons that are known to inhabit the waters around the pier. We booked our ferry to Kangaroo Island while we still had phone reception, then headed into Deep Creek Conservation Reserve, and settled in among the trees at the Stringybark campsite.
