Living in Bali presents many opportunities that you would not get if you were just here for a short stay, like after just a few weeks at the school, Olive (and the rest of the family) was invited to attend the wedding celebration of her teacher Ibu Indah and Steven.

A Balinese Wedding

The ceremony was held at the school. We did not know what to expect, as the bride was from Java and the groom was from the US. We had seen some Balinese wedding ceremonies before, which are very colourful affairs. Surprisingly the bride appeared in a white dress. They had already been formally married in a ceremony back in Java the week before, which we assume was more traditional. This celebration appeared to be a nod to western traditions, possibly for the groom’s sake.

Olive’s class also put on a special performance, playing a version of ‘My Way’ on the traditional instrument Angklung. Olive had missed a lot of the practice, but still did a great job joining in. It may look like she looked a bit lost, but she assures us that she was just waiting for her turn.

The other highlight for us was the array of local food provided. I don’t know what each of them was called or what was in them, but they certainly looked different with a few different flavours which the kids were hesitant to try. It was also a great opportunity for us to meet more parents from Olive’s class. Overall it was a nice day out, and most importantly we have begun to feel a part of the community.
