Mission Beach: On a Mission

August 9th, 2008 : mission-beach-on-a-mission

Beware of CassowariesWe stopped at Tully for a browse through their Sunday markets on the main street. Tully is the wettest town in Australia, but it wasn't raining today. It was cloudy though, which may have been partly from the large plumes of smoke that were churning out of the chimneys of the Sugar Mills. Driving through this area it is amazing the amount of sugar cane fields, interspersed with banana plantations. Back on the coast we reached Mission Beach, and got the last remaining spot at the council run caravan park. It may be cheap and nasty, but it has the best location in town - right next to a beautiful palm lined beach. We took off on a rainforest walk, unsuccessfully looking for cassowaries. Not only are there not many around, but they live in very dense rainforest that you can't see very far into. They are an endangered species, partly due to being regularly hit by cars. We may have better luck seeing one by driving around. It was a cloudy and windy day, we hope it becomes more beach weather tomorrow. We finished the day with fish and chips by the beach, then off to sleep to the sound of waves (and the guitar playing hippies!).
