Eucla: Three Big Things

March 15th, 2009 : eucla-three-big-things

Bunda CliffsWe packed up early while Olive played with her Dutch friend Lasser. We drove back on the gravel road to the Eyre Highway, and to start our Nullarbor drive. We have both been along this route before, but it does not stop us being in awe of the truly vast expanse of nothingness. It is amazing that nothing can be so interesting. We pulled over for a break at Yalata Roadhouse – not realizing that it had closed since we last passed through,  we made ourselves a coffee anyway.  A little further on, and 12 km off highway was the ‘Head of Bight’. This was also closed (as it is not Whale watching season) but you can walk along the boardwalk anyway, with great views of the start of the Great Australian Bight as well as huge sand dunes in the other direction. At the SignWe miscalculated our food supplies and had to cook up our veggies and overdose on fruit (Rob’s allocation for the week) at the Nullarbor roadhouse, prior to crossing into WA. There were hungry dingos hanging around, and a big Whale, an unusual sight in the middle of the desert. At the border village, near another big thing, a kangaroo, we met another couple cooking up all their veggies as well – looks like we are not the only ones! Olive enjoyed following their 3 young boys around. Lucky for Olive they’re staying at same place as us tonight. We made it just across the border to Eucla, not a bad campsite considering we’re in the middle of the desert. There was another big whale near a big playground (maybe they breed the kids big in WA). It is great to be back in WA.
