Our World Top-10 List: Most Memorable Sunsets

[ more Top-10 Lists ]

This list is our own personal top-ten most memorable sunsets based on what we have seen and experienced in our travels, many of them from our year-long trip around the world in 2005. Of course, it is the same sun that sets wherever you are in the world, but somehow wherever you are and what you are doing can make some of them extra special.

Also, check out our most memorable sunrises.

1. Ait-Ben-Haddou, Morocco

A perfect time to ride in the desert

It does not get much better than this, a sunset camel ride in the Moroccan desert. We were staying at Ait-Ben-Haddou and were not sure if we would even get the camel ride we had promised the kids. At the last minute we were offered this excursion, and it surpassed all our expectations.

2. Amed, Bali, Indonesia

amed sunset

Just us and a local fisherman on his traditional wooden boat, cruising the waters off Amed, in the north of Bali.

3. Rajasthan, India

India sunset beers

At our campsite in the sand dunes, our first night out on the camel safari, we were not surprised to see a small boy ride up to us on a camel with a pack full of beer to sell. A wonderful way to finish the day, sipping on a (warm) beer watching the sun set over the dunes.

4. Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Taj Mahal sunset

The Taj Mahal looks impressive at any time of day, but it is hard to beat this view of its backside at sunset, with the reflection in the river. This is a view most tourists do not get to see.

5. Mirissa, Sri Lanka

Rob having a beer in Sri Lanka

Rob having a beer on the beach in Mirissa, Sri Lanka. Nothing beats a relaxing drink, with your feet in the sand, after a long day doing touristy things. (see Rob having a beer in every country)

6. Pisa, Italy

Pisa sunset

We lucked out and get tickets to climb the leaning tower of Pisa at sunset.

7. Cairo, Egypt

Cruising the nile 2005 sunset

Cruising down the Nile near Cairo was pretty special.

8. Lake Attilian, Guatemala

Sunset at Lake Attilian in Guatemala

Seeing the huge Lake Attilian in Guatemala for the first time took our breath away. At the end of a hot day, there were plenty of quiet beer shops near the shore to sit back and watch the sun go down.

9. Caye Caulker, Belize

Sunset at Caye Caulker Belize

Every sunset was spectacular on the island of Caye just off Belize City. With a bit of rum and reggae music in the air, you can’t go wrong in this laid-back paradise.

10. Cruising the Mediterranean

Cruising into the Sunset

We were on our way across the Mediterranean to the French island of Corsica on an overnight ferry. The sunset was great with not a piece of land in sight. Classic experience of sailing into the sunset.

* worthy mentions: sunset over San Fran from Alcatraz Island, Assos Turkey, Dahab Egypt, Acropolis Greece, Queenstown New Zealand.
