Our World Top 10 List: Favourite Accommodation
[ more Top-10 Lists ]
This list is our own personal top-ten based list on what we have seen and experienced in our travels, mostly from our year long trip around the world in 2005. We always look for good value accommodation options, so this list is mostly cheaper budget places to stay.
1. Lanquin, Guatemala
At this backpacker place in Languin, we had our own little hut with magnificent views of the Guatemalan hills and the river flowing past, and we awoke with wild horses at the window.
2. Fairy Chimney, Goreme Turkey
We found our own little fairytale house carved out of the rock. A typical turkish breakfast was also included to make it a special experience.
3. Tulum Beach, Mexico
Our beach hut had beautiful white sand all the way up to the door, and even all over the floor of the hut. It was only a short walk to the Mayan ruins too.
4. Miramar Hotel, Caye Caulker Belize
We stayed at the Miramar Hotel on this laid back island. It had a great balcony to watch the passing traffic and views out over the Caribbean Sea.
5. New Orleans, USA
The biggest room all to ourselves, and there was a swimming pool too. Not bad for a backpacker hotel.
6. Zacetacas, Mexico
From the rooftop sitting area we had fantastic view of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Zacatecas. We actually had the same view from out the window of our room. Cheap beer and a well equiped kitchen were also bonuses.
7. Whitby, England
The Whitby YHA Hostel is located on top of the hill just next to an old cemetery and the Abbey ruins. The view was sensational at night with the abbey lit up.
8. Don Det, Laos
We had our own place with this spectacular view of the river. The owners were happy to cook you up whatever we asked for. Million dollar views for a couple of dollars.
9. Atrani, Italy
A wonderful setting on the Italian coast with this great little beach just down from our hostel. The service was very good, and the breakfast even better.
10. Green Tortoise, San Francisco, USA
With free breakfast and occasional evening meals, organised nights out, all the info you need and friendly staff, this hostel really had it all worked out.
* missing out on the top 10 are: a riverside chalet in Vang Vieng Laos, a hostel near the beach in San Diego USA, and next to the train tracks in Santa Barbara USA.
