Ormiston Gorge: Another Day, Another Pound

June 10th, 2008 : ormiston-gorge-another-day-another-pound

The gorge here is set within a ring of mountains (called a pound) which is similar to Wilpena Pound at the Flinders Ranges, but much larger. We walked the long and tiring 3.5 hr hike around the pound and through the gorge. It was rather boring in parts, but the view of the Pound from the lookout, and the meander through the high rock cliffs, were spectacular. In the afternoon Clare did some work While Rob took Olive for a play, and then role reversal, Rob did some work while Clare went to a Ranger talk and another hike with Olive up to the lone Ghost Gum on top of the gorge. We have to admit that the MacDonnell Ranges surrounding Alice has been an unexpected surprise. We highly recommend anyone coming to the red centre to include these ranges in their itinerary, in addition to Uluru, the Olgas and King's Canyon of course.
