Cowell, Eyre Peninsula: Crabby

February 25th, 2009 : cowell-eyre-peninsula-crabby

Alligator GorgeWe drove over the mountains to Alligator Gorge, which is also in the Mt Remarkable National Park, and walked for two hours along the gorge with high rock walls that gradually narrowed. From here we drove back to the main highway and north to Port Augusta, where we stopped for supplies and lunch in grassy park. From here we followed the signs to Western Australia, and entered the Eyre Peninsula, the last peninsula before the border. The first town we came to was Wyalla, and the best thing about this large industrial city was it provided a shop to buy a nice cold ice-cream. We headed further south to the small fishing village of Cowell, and camped under a large tree in the dust, perfect for Olive. Only minutes after setting up the van, our neighbours donated five large crabs, then a little while later another fellow camper gave us another six. It is crab season and apparently they are easy to catch.
