Flinders Chase NP, Kangaroo Island: Animal Island

February 18th, 2009 : flinders-chase-np-kangaroo-island-animal-island

Kangaroo Island Sea LionWe headed off to explore Australia’s third largest island, with the plan of spending a night at the other end. The first stop was Seal Bay, where you can get up close and personal with sea lions down at the beach. A short drive along the coast was Vivonne Beach, voted best in Australia in 1994. This required more dirt road, which we promised not to do again. However, there are many ‘not to be missed’ places on the island that require travel on gravel roads. We just did a drive-by of the beach, as Olive was sleeping. The beach looked OK but maybe not the best we’ve seen on our travels. We dropped into a lovely gallery, having to take turns having a look. Lunch stop was at Kelly Caves, but with no exploring, then finally we ended our day at the KI West End Caravan park, just short of Flinders Chase National Park. We had planned to camp in the National Park, but most of the campsites there are still closed from a bushfire a couple of years ago. With the help of other tourists searching we discovered many koalas in the trees around us in the caravan park campsite. The evening was finished with a stroll around a nearby lagoon.
