Tanunda, Barossa Valley: Winos Again

February 2nd, 2009 : tanunda-barossa-valley-winos-again

Map the MinerA big driving day today to get us off this boot shaped peninsula. We continued up the west coast, passing through Maitland, and having a lolly shop break at Moonta. We re-supplied further north at Kadina and had lunch at a big park with a train and a playground for Olive to play on. We then retraced our steps and headed east through Port Wakefield, stopping for a coffee break at the interestingly named town of Balaclava. By late afternoon we reached the northern side of the Barossa Valley, Kapunda. We saw a little local art galley above the information centre, and under it we saw an excellent interpretive display of the town’s history. We were then directed up the road to an old church converted to a lived-in art studio, including a waterwise succulent nursery. Even these cacti were struggling following the recent heat wave! However, the town's main attraction was the large statue of a miner on the outskirts of town - we cannot resist the big things. A short drive further south had us at the grassy caravan park at Tanunda, ready to explore this town tomorrow.
