Williamstown: Whirlwind Day

February 4th, 2009 : williamstown-whirlwind-day

Olive SculptureRob mapped out a full day’s itinerary to see the remainder of the Barossa Valley that we didn’t fit in yesterday. We started with a drive through the historic village of Bethany, then onto the scenic drive to Angaston, stopping at Mengler Hill lookout for a spectacular view over the valley plus a walk through the sculpture park. At Angaston town, there was tastings of cheese and dried fruit. We also explored the Luhrs Cottage, an old school house which is made from mud and straw. Next on the agenda was a drive out to Truro for just one thing, the ‘World of Olives’ shop. After some great olive purchases we headed back to Nuriootpa for lunch at a park by the creek. Here we saw possibly the first ever motorhome, literally a mini house on wheels, built in the 1930s. We had a quick look at the Barossa Bush Gardens, but it was too hot to stay around. We drove out to the lovely lake setting of Maggie Beers farm shop, famous for the TV show ‘The Cook and the Chef’. There was just enough time to sample a few more wines, so we drove out along the road lined with huge date palms leading to Speppeltfield Winery, and also stopped at their mausoleum on a hill. At Penfolds we considered buying a bottle of Grange, but decided that the money may be better spent on Olive’s education. We headed out of the Valley, stopping next to an oval in Williamstown for the night.
