Hahndorf, Adelaide Hills: Lofty Heights

February 5th, 2009 : hahndorf-adelaide-hills-lofty-heights

Big Rocking HorseOur first stop was at the Whispering Wall, a dam wall designed with the acoustics to enable a whisper to travel 100m across. We stopped at a chocolate factory, before arriving at another big thing - the Big Rocking Horse in Gumeracha. It’s not made of wood nor does it rock, but it was big. They had the obligatory tourist shop, but we did manage to find some interesting wooden toys for Olive. There was also a lame free animal sanctuary, mostly with ducks to feed (for a fee). Here we changed plans after checking the weather forecast. As tomorrow is going to be another sizzler, we decided to stay outdoors today. We drove on to Belair National Park and found a BBQ next to some green grass for lunch, then drove a bit further to Waterfall Gully. Here we hiked about 4km to the summit of Mt Lofty, which was tiring hard work for all of us. Heading back to Hahndorf, we stayed at a resort – which is not very resort-like.
