Charters Towers: Didn't Know It.

August 2nd, 2008 : charters-towers-didnt-know-it

View through the windowIt was a short 100km drive from Pentland to the old gold mining town of Charters Towers. We wandered around this small pretty town checking out the heritage buildings, and got an overview of the town and surrounding area from Lookout Hill. The fuel here is the cheapest we have found so far, only 1.48/litre, much to the relief of our bank balance. It is 10c a litre cheaper here in Queensland than NSW due to a difference in taxes. The caravan park provided some free entertainment - a free poetry reading by a bush poet, and afterwards a cheap but filling homecooked meal provided by a local church group. It was nice to sit around and catch up with a few of the grey nomads, swapping stories of our adventures.
