Pentland: Not A Penthouse

August 1st, 2008 : pentland-not-a-penthouse

Dinosaur JawsHeading into Australia's dinosaur region, our first stop was the town of Richmond (some flashbacks for Clare). Although the Dinosaur museum here was basic, it had some spectacular fossil specimens that have been collected from the surrounding area. We were inspired, and headed of to the nearby fossicking area. It was not as exciting as it sounded, and we soon lost interest picking up stone after stone in the heat. We really did not know what we were looking for and came back with a couple of fossilised shells. We saw no sign of the mysterious circus man who helped out last night, and anyway we were not going to hang around this quiet town very long. Next on the fossil tour was Hughenden, but we bypassed their fossil museum. The other destination on the fossil trail, which is unfortunately 100's of kms away including some dirt roads, is Winton and the nearby dinosaur footprint evidence of a dinosaur stampede. That will have to wait until our next trip. We stayed the night at a quiet caravan park in Pentland. Today we also reached the milestone of 10000 km so far for this trip - we don't want to know how much we have spent on fuel.
