Hervey Bay: Stuck at the Beach

October 2nd, 2008 : hervey-bay-stuck-at-the-beach

Historic PierWe drove form Childers to Hervey Bay, not long ago a sleepy seaside village, now a thriving metropolis. Down by the long stretch of beach it is a bit mellower and this is where we are camping. It is made up of five micro settlements all buzzing with activity. We rode our bikes along the esplanade to the historic Urganuan Pier, which was packed with fisherpeople of all types and sizes. They were catching a lot of tiny fish which were mostly being fed to the waiting pelicans or kept as bait for something bigger. The two main things to do from Hervey Bay are visit Fraser Island, which is difficult and expensive without a 4WD, and go whale watching, which is cost prohibitive for us at over $100 each. So we will just enjoy the beach and the ambiance.
