After all our goodbyes, we headed south of Townsville for the first time. We stopped in Ayr for lunch, then across the Burdekin River Bridge to Home Hill. Here we visited the Interpretive Centre, all about the history of the Burdekin Bridge we just crossed, and the troubles they had to create a bridge across the frequently flooding mighty Burdekin River. Also in town was Ashworth’s Rock and gem shop, which was interesting to say the least! We stayed the night just behind town at a Comfort Stop - free showers, eating and rest area provided by the local council. You definitely need a shower around here as the local practice of burning the sugar cane fields results in an almost invisible fine layer of black soot (or black snow as they call it here) everywhere. The only drawback of the rest stop is that it is right next to the railway line, and it was loud!
