Mackay: Oh Sandy

September 25th, 2008 : mackay-oh-sandy

Olive in the SandWe drove back down from Eungella via the steep valley road to Mackay and back to the coast. The mountains were beautiful, but there is something alluring about the ocean. After a little shopping in town, we completed a self-guided heritage walk around town – Dad’s tours! We regularly take this option as it tours us around the streets and takes us places we would not have seen otherwise. There is an awesome collection of Art Deco buildings around town, colourful and cheery. We went to an art gallery - Artspace – which unfortunately held the same traveling exhibition that we saw in Cairns. It’s obviously traveling just as fast as we are. We left Mackay in the afternoon to find a free camping spot about one hour south at Camilla Beach. It was nicely situated on the beach, the only problem was the tracks leading to most sites were very soft sand. We didn’t want to risk getting bogged in our van, so we decided on a camp spot carefully, while we watched a Wicked van get bogged. We eventually found some solid ground under a tree, and Olive found some dirty sand to play in. The beach was not very pleasant being windy with the tide well out.  It was OK for us as we’re only staying overnight, and it is free.
