Wallaman Falls: Big Whiteout

September 9th, 2008 : wallaman-falls-big-whiteout

Wallaman WaterfallWe woke to a loud noise at 2am, and peered outside to see that our awning broken due to the accumulation of water on the canvas. It was still raining when we woke again at six. We postponed our walk to the falls lookout until the afternoon, hoping it would clear. Meanwhile, Olive played in a shelter – the van gets very cramped on rainy days when we are confined to the inside. After lunch it finally stopped raining, but instead a thick fog descended on us. We decided to walk the 2km to the lookout anyway and see what we could see. Looking out across the valley to where the waterfall should be, all we could see was a blanket of white. We were standing in front of the tallest waterfall in Australia, but we couldn’t see a drop. In the aim to remedy, we decided to take the hike down to the base of the falls. It was a long steep walk with Olive asleep in the backpack, but were rewarded with an enchanting view looking up at the 258m single drop, with only the top portion obstructed by fog. Back at the top lookout we saw the waterfall again for a brief moment as the clouds parted. Back at our camp, we were sweaty from our hike and had no choice but to have a cold shower - exhilarating.
