Naracoorte Caves National Park: As Blue as Blue Can Be

January 19th, 2009 : naracoorte-caves-national-park-as-blue-as-blue-can-be

Mt Gambier Blue LakeWe headed south from Naracoorte towards Mt Gambier and back to the coast. Not long later we detoured to Bool Game Reserve Lagoon for no other reason than it sounded interesting. It may have been too, if there was any water in it. It was also closed due to fire risk. We jumped the fence to have a look at the barron birdless area! We passed straight through the Coonawarra wine region, as it was a little too early in the day to taste wine, plus we will also be passing the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley’s over the next weeks, so we won’t be able to keep up with the our purchases! Just after Coonawarra was the historic town of Penola, once home to Blessed Mary McKillop, soon to be Australia’s first saint. We spent some time learning about her hallowed life, while trying to keep Olive under control in this not-so-child-friendly museum. The next stop was Mt Gambier. Arriving at lunchtime we headed to the crater lakes area - a series of craters formed from a now extinct volcano. Despite its name, we didn’t expect the Blue Lake to be so blue! We picnicked next to the Valley Lake, which was surprisingly green. Other highlights were the two interesting limestone open caves; Cave Garden in town, and the Umpherston Sinkhole.
