Port Lincoln: Horse Hero

March 1st, 2009 : port-lincoln

Makybe Diva in Port LincolnFittingly for this relaxing town of Tumby Bay, we slowly arose, had our traditional cooked Sunday morning breakfast, and took until 10am to pack up and leave. We only had to travel 40 or so kms south to get to our next destination, Port Lincoln. This is home to Olympic weightlifter Dean Lukin and many other tuna fishermen; it is also the home of Makybe Diva, of whom they seem more proud. About the first thing we saw as we drove into town was a life-size statue of the horse prominently on display on the lovely grassy foreshore. The caravan park is a couple of kms from the town centre, perched on a hill facing down to the water front with views of an island and the opposing side of the bay. After lunch we took the scenic Parnkalla Walking Trail along the coastline into town. The walk there and back, with a play at the park for Olive and a coffee, took all afternoon. We also passed the jetty, and saw a couple of sealions frolicking in the water around the amateur and commercial fishermen and boats.
