Woomera: Road to Nowhere

May 26th, 2008 : woomera-road-to-nowhere

Rocket LauncherFrom the Flinders Ranges we drove south initially through the lovely historical town of Quorn, then across to Port Augusta and then the start of our drive up the middle along the Stuart Highway. It was a taste of things to come - a long straight road through flat dry desolate country. When enough was enough, we stopped at Woomera - a very mysterious place. Apart from there once being a secret US military base nearby, the Australian attempts to join the space race with rocket launches from here, and a highly protected Detention centre, there was one mystery that will be hard to solve. Why do all the street names begin with B? The town's past as a military base is not hard to imagine with the orderly, neat and very quiet streets. At the caravan park we made good use of the camp kitchen, avoiding using our cramped cooking facilities in the van. It also means you get to meet other travellers, and joining us in the kitchen were a couple of girls from Estonia, who gave us an interesting history lesson about life under communist Russian rule and the changes happening in their part of Europe.
