We left Mt Beauty and took the pretty drive across to Bright, where we had a short stop for supplies. We continued through town up to Mt Buffalo, where we camped near Lake Catani in the National Park. Rain was forecast for later in the day, so we quickly set up camp and headed off on a hike to the Gorge. Passing the picturesque ski lodge – which is closed for the summer – we were rewarded with stupendous views out over the valley from the top of the Gorge, which was over 1000m in elevation. After the 3 hr hike we returned to cook our meal over the old traditional campfire. The rain eventually came, but by then we were heading to bed, all rugged up for a cold night in the mountains.
