Day 2: Finishing Launceston

As was yesterday, the weather is very fine and sunny. We hope it stays this way all week. In the morning we finished exploring Tassie's second largest town, Launceston. There was a nice mix of old buildings in civic square and nearby. There are a few nice parks around town that are very nice too. In City Park, there is a monkey enclosure with Japanese Macaques.

We left Launceston just before noon and headed along the road to Hobart, the shortest route to Coles Bay on the east coast. At the turnoff at Campbelltown we decided to continue for another 10 km to the historic township of Ross. We walked around this small town admiring the old buildings, including a visit to a convict women's prison and an old cemetery. The highlight of the town is the convict built bridge with it's well preserved intricate sandstone carvings.

We arrived in Coles Bay late in the day - our 1.5 hour drive to had taken us 5 hours due to Rob's slow driving speed plus stoppages. As we neared our destination, the roads were quiet - we began to get excited about our wilderness cabin. We got our keys from Coles Bay and proceeded to the end of the road in the Freycinet National Park. Our cabin was old and run down, yet cosy and secluded, with a bonus private beach on Coles Bay. We went back to town to get some supplies (food, fuel, water & local beer!), then back to our cabin for entree and beer, sitting on the balcony and watching the sun go down. We had a couple of little visitors who had sniffed out our food, a wallaby plus her baby joey.
