Day 3: Hike to see Wineglass Bay

After a breakfast of eggs, bread and fruit to fuel our day, we headed off for our four hour return journey to the lookout and then down to the infamous Wineglass Bay and return. Much to some tourists' disappointment, this moderately strenuous hike is the only way to get to Wineglass Bay - the most photographed and publicised location in Tassie. The bay is called wineglass as it looks like a wineglass when viewed from above. After the fairly steep climb up to the lookout the view was certainly worth the hike! The mostly downhill second phase took us to the pristine white sands of the beach itself.

Another glorious fine day in Tasmania. It was a hot walk - but not hot enough to go for a dip in the frosty crystal water. We took a stroll along the beach and enjoyed our pre-prepared lunch at the other end of the bay. After discussions with a few other visitors, instead of returning the same way back up the hill we changed our plan and decided to cross the peninsula to Hazards Beach and go around the Hazards mountain range back to the car park. This way was supposed to be much flatter walking but a bit longer - two hours instead of one. It was nice to see some different tracks, another beach and some interesting landscapes and bird life, but we were very tired after our five hour adventure (we calculated it was about 15 kms). Two minutes drive back to our cosy run down shack, we snacked, drank (beer for Rob, water for Clare) and read about our next move ahead.
