Day 8: Crossing the State

We left early from Hobart to drive across the state to Strahan on the west coast. On the way we stopped at Mt Field National Park, about 1.5 hours out of Hobart. The park is well know for its waterfalls. It was only a short walk to the first, Russell Falls, through damp and mossy forest. We were on the lookout for platypus which are known to be in this area. We continued the track to horseshoe Falls, through the Tall Trees Circuit with the towering Swamp Gums, then to Lady Barron Falls and return. Afterwards we had a very filling BBQ meal with some snags, rolls and other treats we had brought with us from Hobart.

Continuing on our journey, we crossed the southern part of the Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park, and had a quick look at large Lake St Clair, the southern endpoint of the Overland Walking Track. Further along, we went through the mining town of Queenstown, reaching our final destination Strahan late in the afternoon.

Our pre-booked accomodation at the 'Strahan Wilderness Cabins' was ideally just outside town set in some lovely natural bushland overlooking 'smuggler's cove'. Even though the cabin is fully self-contained and very cosy, we decided to head into town and treat ourselves to a lovely meal of fresh seafood.
