Day 5: Tuesday, 28th May

A Quiet One?

The kids are getting a bit fatigued, so we decided that a relatively quiet day was in order. Of course we couldn't just sit around when in a new country. The day started with a few showers but they soon dried up.

We walked a few blocks east to Wangfugi Street, an upmarket shopping mall not far from our hotel. Our first stop was for a traditional McDonald's soft serve cone. Wherever we are in the world, there is always a 50 cent cone. We also like to check out how the menu is different, even though we are not big fans of their food. Nearby was the Snack Street, unfortunately we were not hungry as the live scorpions on a stick seemed so appealing! The foods in general here seemed like better choices than the night market we went to yesterday.

There was an amazing multi story children's toy shop, but the toys were not much different in price than back home. We thought that the toys made in China would be cheap here. The kids had fun exploring the shelves anyway, and looking at all the toys on display.

We continued up the road to an LP recommended restaurant to try the famous Beijing roast duck. It was a great choice, the restaurant was located in a traditional courtyard, a friendly personal and authentic place. We had to wait a while for it to be cooked, while the kids drew, checked out the pet fish, turtle and birds, and had their photos taken, again. It was a great experience.
