We had a western breakfast of cereal in the hostel kitchen, the same as yesterday.
For the morning we jumped on a bus for a ten minute ride to the Hida Folk Village. We had lunch at the restaurant across the road and tried a few Japanese fried snacks before taking the bus back into Takayama town. The snacks included a 12 cm long skinny dough with curry inside, a round burger shaped crumbed with panko bread crumbs, inside had some eight plus mashed potato like texture. A rice paddy square in shape with subtle flavour with little bits of beef throughout. As is usual the custom, a serving of Japanese tea is often provided with meals.
On the walk home from the bus stop we discovered a traditional French bakery with yummy French bread which Rob could not resist. We bought a baguette, croissant for breakfast and a doughnut which was eaten immediately! Lots of other yummy options such as scones, muffins, and brioche. For an afternoon snack was some Sushi from a supermarket.
Drinks are everywhere. Some are familiar, but may be in a different container.
We walked to the centre of town for a feed. The Japanese love to show off their menu with plastic models in the front windows.
We chose a place well known for serving some local Hida beef dishes (Takayama is famous for Hida beef). This is how the beef should be, the 'marbling' from all the fat that it contains.
The dish we had beef in it, but we are not sure what part of the animal. Miso paste sauce served on rice included meat (beef) with some rather strange ingredients - chewy gristle possibly intestines and a gluttonous thing? Interesting flavour. Another dish we had was Hida beef cooked with honey and served on rice with pickled Ginger (mild flavour).
We needed a beer after that. There is a beer vending machine at the hostel, a great way to keep them cold waiting for the time to taste a few local brews.
