Austria

Sept 18 - Sept 19, 2005

Again we have a short visit to Austria during this trip, this time to another part of the country. You can read about our first stopover here.

Double dipping
A slight change in plans today, we woke early to get a train back to Austria instead of to Germany. Our friends in Munich are not ready for us yet, so we detoured to Salzburg instead. It was quite cold again today, apparently (according to the locals) there is a cold snap in the region, hopefully it will improve. We walked around town and visited the main cathedral, and the beautiful Schloss Mirabelle gardens. Large beutifully manicured gargens seem to be very popular in Austria. At our hostel, there is a nightly showing of the movie 'Sound of Music', which was filmed in Salzburg. Rob only lasted through half of it, but enough to see some of the beautiful countryside that we are visiting.

The hills are alive
We decided to forgo the popular ‘Sound of Music’ tour of the surrounding countryside, and concentrated on exploring the town of Salzburg, which also featured prominently in the movie. This town is the home of Mozart. They have special Mozart chocolates everywhere, and we visited a museum in a house he lived at. A short bus ride away was the Hellbrunn Palace, with its trick water fountains, making for a very funny and wet tour. We saw a pretty cemetery (yes they can be pretty), then explored the large castle on the hill. We walked along the wooded hilltop overlooking the town, to a beer hall run by monks, to try their special brew.

next we take a short train journey north to Germany.
