Day 18: Sunday, 15th July

Rice bubbles (called rice krispies as it is called here) was added to the breakfast repertoire.

We were shown some soya beans.

The kids ate a sandwich lunch at home again, while Rob and I ventured out alone to Soma – an organic vegetarian raw food café. This type of thing is all the rage here in Ubud.

We ordered gado gado rolls, which were lightly steamed julienned carrots and green beans, cucumber, sweet chili and sprouts wrapped in cabbage and served with kaffir lime peanut sauce. A well-presented dish, and nice with the sauce.

Live Pad Thai (meaning all raw), this was jicama (which is a type of root vegetable), daikon and carrot noodles, with chopped cashews, coriander, Thai basil, mint, sprouts and kaffir lime. Quite a subtle flavour, but very good.

Lastly the Tower of Power , which was a cooked dish; stacked grilled jicama, mashed purple sweet potato, grilled pineapple, ginger mashed pumpkin, topped with grilled onion, served with Asian greens. Fantastic colour and look to this meal, and tasted pretty good too. I don’t think Rob has eaten this many vegetables for a long time!

tower of power

For drinks we had a lemongrass and ginger iced drink. Oh so healthy!!

Dinner we had with our friend Jo at another vegetarian place Café Sopa – yes a soup café! Jo had carrot soup, and shared it with Casper! All on video!

a couple of drinks, ice coffee and juice. No straws, just a bamboo pipe. I think they wash them and reuse.

Rob and the kids had pasta (for the first time on this holiday); one with basil pesto, the other with a cream tomato sauce, both with mushrooms. They both tasted pretty good, the pesto wasn’t the typical Italian style, and the tomato sauce wasn’t super creamy.

Rob also ordered Lumpia, spring rolls of course. They were called seaweed lumpia, but that was only a small part of the filling, which also had mushroom.

Clare had the vegetarian Nasi Campur where I got to choose my extras. With the red rice I decided on a potato and corn croquette, banana flower lawar (coconut salad), Bali curry (very mild), ratatouille (to keep with the Italian theme) served with a spicy paste and an onion and green chilli salsa.

We indulged in some cake too, a snake fruit pie and a carrot cake.
