Nimbin: Alternative Route

October 28th, 2008 : nimbin-alternative-route

Most Eastern Point of AustraliaWe drove up to the Byron lighthouse but refused to pay the $7 parking fee. Luckily we found a park a short way down the hill, then we just walked back up. The lighthouse is situated on the Cape, the most eastern point of mainland Australia. From here we drove inland from Byron to Nimbin, passing through Lismore. We had lunch at a huge kid’s park, and saw an excellent exhibition of Brett Whiteley’s work at the Lismore Regional Art Gallery. About half an hour away was Nimbin, the country town made famous by the Aquarius alternative festival held here in the 1970s. A lot of the hippies have stayed around and are still here today, with their grandchildren! We found a nice quiet camping spot out the back of the relaxed grassy caravan park. We headed straight for the very welcoming large round free public swimming pool which was right next door.
