King's Creek: Up the Creek

June 2nd, 2008 : kings-canyon-up-the-creek

Cleaning Up the Red DirtToday it is still too windy up the top of Uluru for the climb to be open, so no luck for Clare. They close the climb up the rock if the wind is excessive at the peak (though there measurement methods leave a little to be desired), if it is too hot (forecast over 35 degrees), if there is an accident (over 25 climbers have died over the years) or if there is a time of mourning or cultural event for the local Aboriginals. This results in it being closed quite regularly. Clare will have to wait till next time to climb, whenever that may be. We went out to the rock anyway, and joined a free guided tour (Marla Walk) by a Park Ranger along the base. The ranger turned out to be quite a character and made the talk about Aboriginal culture and history quite interesting, albeit innacurate. The rest of the day was spent driving towards Kings Canyon, about 300 km away. We stopped just short for the night, at Kings Creek Station.
