Lake Tinnaroo: Coffee Heaven

September 1st, 2008 : lake-tinnaroo-coffee-heaven

Lake Tinaroo ViewWe started the day with a walk along Granite Gorge, which involved quite a bit of challenging scrambling over rocks, but well worth it. Over 70% of Australia's coffee comes from the Mareeba area, so of course we had to try some. There are a few coffee plantations you can visit, but we chose the smallest, run by Bruno, an Italian who makes the coffee using many old fashioned techniques. Clare rated his coffee the best she has ever had! On the other end of the scale is Coffee World in town which has an extensive coffee museum, where you can taste 21 different coffees. From Mareeba it was only a short drive to Lake Tinaroo, a large man-made lake with some great camping and fishing spots around it. We stopped at Downfall Creek campsite and got a fantastic campsite with unobstructed views of the lake.
