Malanda: Lakes Galore

September 3rd, 2008 : malanda-lakes-galore

Cathedral Fig TreeIn the morning, we were invited to share cake with our new friends to celebrate Richie's birthday. We had to reluctantly move on from the tranquil spot, but time is running quick. We continued along the dirt road around the lake, and were close to being run off the road by a logging truck coming the other way. Along this road we stopped for a lovely short walk to a Mobo Crater, and another stop to see the huge Cathedral 'strangler fig' Tree. We stopped at another larger crater lake, Lake Barrine, and had Devonshire Tea at the historic teahouse. We then went to its twin lake, Lake Eachem, where we walked the 3km rainforest walk around the perimeter of the lake, had lunch then a quick yet satisfying dip in the crystal clear waters. Our next stop was another huge tree, the Curtain Fig Tree. We strolled (or took Dad's tours) around the nearby town of Yungaburrga, checking out the old buildings and trying to see a tree kangaroo and platypus. Our final stop was Malanda to camp next to a waterfall.
