Nanga Mill Campsite, Lane Poole Conservation Reserve: Searching for Shangri-La

April 5th, 2009

Bunbury LighthouseWe stayed overnight in Bunbury, a short walk to the Dolphin Discovery Centre across the road. They were looking at a record seven days straight of no dolphin sightings, so it was not looking good for us. Our usual good fortune was missing. We have seen many dolphins on this trip so we are not too disappointed.

We headed back to the caravan park and packed up, returning briefly to see if the dolphins had turned up, but still no go. We drove to Marlston Hill lookout for an overview of the town. Just below were some mansions, and lots of waterside properties to view. Bunbury has grown up since we were last here. From there we drove along the coast for a while, and then headed back for our lunch date with Clare’s cousin Ben. He has a son Caylen who is the same age as Olive. We met at a fish café with views of Koombana Bay. As usual, it was a long catch up as it had been many years. Smallest Church

Leaving Bunbury, we drove a short distance north along the coast to Australind to see a very interesting church – one of the oldest and most definitely the smallest in Australia – only 4 x 7m.

We then drove through Myalup, Harvey and then on to Lane Poole Conservation Park. We were looking for ‘Shangri-La’, a camping spot of fond memories for Clare when she was younger. We did not quite find the right place, but we found a quiet site near the river alone among the pine trees for one of our last nights on the road.
