Day 5: Convict History

We were up bright and early with the sun in our eyes, a good sign for a nice day ahead. We packed our bags again ready to move on to the next destination.

First, though, we visited the nearby Port Arthur Historic Site, the second convict settlement in Australia. Included in the entry was a very informative guided tour and a boat cruise in the harbour. We learnt a lot about the convict history of Van Dieman's Land, and the harsh conditions these people had to endue in the early days of this country. It was a beautiful site and another beautiful day to enjoy it.

The Crown Prince and Princess of The Netherlands were also coming see the place, arriving by helicopter. Unfortunately we missed them by minutes.

After about four hours of exploring the place, we left to drive to Tasmania's capital city Hobart, going via Richmond to see the old historic town with some interesting buildings and Australia's oldest bridge built in 1836 by convicts.

We finally reached Hobart at 6 pm, checked in at the backpackers, and headed down to the waterfront for some quality fish and chips at a floating restaurant on the pier.
