Cadbury Chocolate Factory Tour

Cascade brewery in Hobart

The view from Mt Weillington after the snow stopped falling

Day 6: Snowing in Hobart

The first stop in our Hobart tour was the Cadbury Chocolate Factory. We felt like we had entered Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, or chocolate land on the Simpsons. There were tonnes of the stuff, and heaps more being made every minute. We saw freddos, turkish delights and some favourite being made, and big vats of chocolate being mixed and recycled. We learned all about the process of making chocolate and then best of all bought a heap of it at the shop - just getting our ration of 10 kg per person per year!

We had a short break before our next factory tour, so we stopped at the Art Gallery and Museum, of which the highlight was the Antarctica display with old 3D photos of Antarctica. Afterwards we were able to duck into the mall for some lunch.

Continuing the theme for the day, we went on another tour, this time to the 'oldest brewery in Australia' and the favourite beer of Hobartians - Cascade. The brewery is housed in a very nice old building situated at the base of Mt Wellington. We had a very informative tour of the equipment (there was no production as the staff were all having a day off!), and we got to sample some of their products afterwards.

To fill in the rest of the day, we decided to explore the Salamanca area and check out a couple of galleries. Tomorrow we will be back here for the market. We had dinner at the Vietnamese Kitchen.

While in Salamanca, we noticed that the clouds had lifted from Mt Wellington, so we made a dash up there (20 minute drive) hoping to get a clear view of Hobart from above. As we made the 20 km journey up the hill, the clouds came back in and started to drop snow! What a surprise. We had a little frolic in the snow, but not for long as it was soooo cold.
