Paronella Park, Mena Creek: Father’s Day

September 7th, 2008

Rob and Olive at Paronella ParkThis morning we had a special delicious cooked breakfast for Father’s Day. Leaving here to avoid the rain, our first destination was just south of Innisfail to a Sugar Museum – where we found out everything we need to know about sugar cane farming. Now it is clear what is going on in the cane fields everywhere around here.

We drove to Etty Bay for lunch, only to find this tiny secluded bay packed due to a local surf carnival. We luckily found a spot to park and eat our lunch, while enjoying the beach activities. Our final destination was Paronella Park, unusual and interesting ruins of a pleasure park from 50 or more years ago. A Spanish guy built the place of his dreams in the 1930s, with castles and waterfalls, only for it to be left to ruin after a series of misfortunes. A passing tourist has bought the place and turned it into a tourist attraction. A free night’s accommodation was included with our entry, including a day and night tour of the park.
