We’re back from India, and here are some photos from our final destination, Chennai. Although we only stayed for one night, we treated ourselves to a luxurious stay, which provided a striking contrast to the crazy busy streets of the city.

The small seaside town of Mahabalipuram is renowned for its ancient rock carvings. It was the second-to-last stop on our three-week South India tour. The town had a serene, laid-back vibe. We strolled through its streets, exploring the magnificent temples, picking up some last-minute souvenirs, and gearing up for the hustle and bustle of Chennai.

Pondicherry was a great place to spend Christmas. There was lots of action in the evenings around the old colonial French Quarter, good beaches and delicious bakeries.

The next stop on our South India tour was the big city of Madurai with its big temple and old palace.

We travelled into the mountains to spend a couple of days around and in Periyar Tiger Reserve. We didn't see any tigers, but plenty of other wildlife. It was a little cooler in the mountains, and a bit quieter and more relaxed.

We spent a relaxing couple of days in a friendly homestay on quiet and peaceful Munroe Island in Kerala, the sunrise canal cruise the highlight.

Next stop on our South India tour is Varkala beach, with restaurants and shops on the cliff above. Again most of our time seemed to be spent eating, with a long swim in the warm waters and surfing lessons for the kids.
