This list is our own personal top-ten favourite buildings based on what we have seen and experienced in our travels.

[updated in 2017 with the Pantheon and Colosseum added]

1. Taj Mahal, Agra, India

The ultimate building, the perfect symmetry beautiful from a distance and the detail beautiful from up close.

2. Tower of Pisa, Pisa, Italy

This would be on the top list of buildings the world whether it was leaning or not. It is not just the tower building that is interesting, the whole complex has a few building in the same style which as fascinating to explore.

3. Municipal House, Prague, Czech Republic

There are so many great buildings in Prague, it was hard to chose one. This building was built in the art nouveau style, and had some spectacular design and artworks that made it stand out.

4. Rockefeller Center, New York, USA

The Rockefeller Center, a collection of buildings, surprisingly has some fantastic building art and sculptures when you have a close look.

5. Casa Batllo or La Pedrera, Barcelona, Spain

Architect Antoni Gaudi was well ahead of his time, designing wonderful buildings that are actually ‘works of art’. This is just one of his masterpieces that are found around Barcelona, and at night the unusual shapes really stand out.

7 .The Pantheon, Rome Italy

The Pantheon is a former Roman temple

Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon’s dome is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.

8. Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas, USA

Fittingly over the top for Las Vegas. Each evening there is a fountain display set to music out front of the hotel.

9. Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey

The Hagia Sophia in İstanbul Turkey was once a mosque then a church. The changes to the building over time have added many interesting elements inside.

10. Empire State Building, New York, USA

Empire State Building

Back as the tallest building in New York now that the twin towers of the World Trade Center is now gone. It is worth going up at night for amazing views of the New York skyline.


Other that were considered for this list include: the Louvre in Paris, Empire State Building in New York, Houses of Parliament, in London

What may have been on the list if we ever visited there: St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Palace of Versailles.
