Top-10 List: Our Favourite Sunsets & Sunrises of Australia

[ more Top-10 Lists ]

This list is our own personal top-ten favourite sunsets and sunrises we have experienced in our travels around Australia. Many came from our 2008 around Australia trip, though we have seen many more amazing views since then.

[updated May 2020, with the addition of Pildappa Rock]

1. Eungella, QLD

Eungella, Queensland, Australia

It still gives me goosebumps when I think about the most amazing sunrise we have ever seen. We woke in our campervan and opened the blinds to see this magnificent view over Eungella National Park and the Pioneer Valley.

2. Darwin, NT

Mindil Beach Sunset Market

A perfect way to experience a sunset, after a great feed at the Mindil Beach Sunset Market in Darwin, NT.

3. Uluru, NT

Ayers Rock Sunset

Sunset and sunrise at Uluru are the best times to see the rock, watching the colours change as the sun goes down (or comes up!)

4. Horseshoe Bay, Bowen, QLD

Baby Olive at Sunset

Our young daughter playing on the beach at sunset at Horseshoe Bay, Bowen, QLD.

5. Cape Tribulation, QLD

Sunset Cape Trib

Sitting waiting for the sun to set at Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia

6. Cottesloe Beach, WA

Cottesloe Beach sculpture sunset

Cottesloe Beach’s ‘sculptures by the sea’ is best appreciated at sunset, joining the huge crowds that also think the same.

7. Broome, WA

Broome sunset

Clare watching the sunset over the water at Cable Beach in Broome, WA

8. Darwin Harbour

Sunset cruise on Darwin harbour

One of the best ways to experience a sunset is from the water, and a balmy evening in Darwin with friends, cruising on Darwin harbour, was one of our favourite sunset experiences.

9. Pildappa Rock, SA

Pildappa Rock Sunrise

Amazing views across the South Australian landscape watching the sun come up from atop Pildappa Rock. We had the place to ourselves and it was so peaceful. We also saw a couple of wallabies that make the rock their home.

10. Lake Monger, WA

Lake Monger Sunset

Such a peaceful sunset at our local Lake Monger, in Perth Western Australia. We feel very fortunate to have this place just a short walk from home.

* Other great sunsets and sunrises missing out on the top 10 are: Darwin Harbour NT, The Wharf in Darwin, Rottnest Island WA, Kings Park WA
