Our World Top-10 List: Most Memorable Sunrises
[ more Top-10 Lists ]
This list is our own personal top-ten most memorable sunrises based on what we have seen and experienced in our travels, many of them from our year-long trip around the world in 2005. Of course, it is the same sun that rises wherever you are in the world, but somehow wherever you are and what you are doing can make some of them extra special.

1. Graskop, South Africa
What a welcome we had to the Panorama Chalets in Graskop, South Africa. We were given a unit on the edge of the cliff, with a magnificent view of the sunset from our balcony. After a solid sleep, we looked out our window at the same view along the valley to see the sun coming up.
2. Varanasi, India
An early morning rise for a ride on a rowboat along the Indian holy river Ganges, watching the life on the shore.
3. Mt Sinai, Egypt
We left from Dahab in the middle of the night, with a long hike up the mountain in the dark to watch the sun come up, and it did not disappoint.
4. Lovina, Bali
We woke early to head out on a traditional fishing boat into the waters off Lovina in the north of Bali. We were looking for dolphins, and so was a lot of other people on similar boats. We saw a few dolphins, but it was being on the water early in the morning as the sun came up that was just as special.
5. Dulikel, Nepal
Rob travelled to Nepal for Habitat for Humanity, helping to build a house for a local family in Dulikel. We woke early each day to travel to the build, and the view of the Himalayan mountains in the distance was amazing.
6. Gili Meno, Lombok, Indonesia
We stayed on Gili Meno, one of the three islands to the north of Lombok. Our cabin was located right on the beach, and stepping out our door each morning we saw this view of the sun coming up over Mt Rinjani.
7. Kruger National Park, South Africa
We took turns going out on a morning sunrise safari in Kruger National Park in South Africa. It was hard to fully appreciate the sunrise as you hiked among the wild animals
8. Uluru, NT, Australia
Sunset and sunrise at Uluru are the best times to see the rock, watching the colours change as the sun goes down (or comes up!). See more top sunrises in Australia.
9. Mt Agung, Bali
On our first trip to Bali in 2002, we made our way to Mount Agung, an active volcano, for a sunrise hike. It was tough going in the dark but worth it for the amazing views at the top as the sun rose.
10. Out the Plane Window
There have been so many times watching the sun rise above the clouds as we are flying to or back from a holiday.
