If you have an avid child reader like we do, you need a good library. Ubud has just the thing, Pondok Pekak. Although there are several good bookshops, this is the only public library.
Pondok Pekak is located on the corner of Jl Dewi Sita and Jl Monkey Forest, at the east side of the football field right in the centre of town. It is a lovely place to visit, and has many great resources.
There is a large range of books available, some in Indonesian as well as English (and many other languages too), children and adult books. We have spent many hours sitting reading books, which you can do for free. If you want to borrow some books, there is a monthly or yearly fee for borrowing three books at a time, though you can pay extra to increase this number.
The centre also offers different learning classes, which we have made good use of. Clare and Olive did a silver jewelry making class, Olive the Balinese dance class and Rob the stone carving. They also do fruit carving, wood carving, offering making, as well as language lessons. It is a wonderful gold mine for learning local cultural activities and at a good price.
