Our World Top 10 List: Our Favourite Big Things

[ more Top-10 Lists ]

This list is our own personal top ten favourite big things, based on what we have seen and experienced in our travels around the world. It is not just a list of the biggest things we have seen, but a reflection on how much we were impressed with the big thing. See also our list of Australian Big Things.

1. Empire State Building, New York, USA

The Empire State Building used to be the tallest building in the world. After the fall of the Twin Towers, it is again one of the biggest things on the New York skyline. The view from the top over the Manhattan skyline is spectacular.

2. Hoover Dam, USA

It really is a damn big dam.

3. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

4. the Great Pyramids, Cairo, Egypt

We were surprised that the pyramids are basically located in the suburbs of Cairo, but so impressive and iconic.

5. Eifel Tower, Paris, France

The Eifel Tower towers over the Paris landscape, spectacular day and night, and you can climb it too, which is always a bonus.

6. Statue of Liberty, New York, USA

We were able to view the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island ferry. It is something that you can appreciate from afar so you can take it all in.

7. Saint Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City

The largest church in the world, and the most important for Christians. You can really get close and personal with this one, after viewing the inside of the church, you can climb to view the dome from inside and also explore the rooftop.

8. Ankor Wat, Siam Reap, Cambodia

It was a hard slog riding bicycles around the sprawling Angkor Watt complex, but it was a way to really appreciate its impressive size.

9. Taj Mahal, Agra, India

10. Todai-Ji Temple, Nara Japan

The largest wooden structure in the world

There are plenty of big things around the world. Some of the big things missing the top 10 include Uluru, Australia, the world’s biggest monolith.
